Blepharoplasty - Lower Upper Eyelid

Blepharoplasty - Lower and Upper Eyelid - Plastic Surgery

What is a blepharoplasty?

The blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that is aimed to improve the way the upper, lower or both eyelids look. This procedure can treat slack skin that creates folds or that hides the natural shape of the upper, the excess skin hanging of the upper eyelid that may affect your vision, an excess of fat deposits that may appear as a swelling of the upper lid, the eye bags, the languidness of the lower eyelids and the excess skin and wrinkles of the lower eyelid.

All of these conditions appear because of the effects of time or because of hereditary reasons. The blepharoplasty removes the skin excess, bags and restores the firmness of the area around the eyes providing a more restful and young appearance.

Am I a good candidate?

This surgery is usually performed by adults with healthy facial tissue and muscles. The best candidates are those persons which are healthy, and do not have any illness that may compromise their health nor the healing process, they cannot smoke either. They should have a positive outlook of the process and really want to look and feel better.

What does the surgery consist of?

Once Dr. Robles has evaluated the anatomy and general health of the patient and you and he have arranged the specifics of the surgery, you will be ready to go into the operating room. There, Dr. Robles will mark the areas where he will do the incisions. He will then take some pictures of the area to compare the changes after the surgery. Finally, you will be anesthetized and sedated, and then the eyelid surgery will begin.

The condition that causes the sagging of the upper eyelid will be dealt with through incisions done on the natural folds of the skin. This will allow the doctor to reposition the fat deposits, stretch the muscles and tissue or remove the excess skin to create a firmer shape of the area.

The lower eyelid will be corrected using a transconjuntival incision, hidden in the lower eyelid. Through this incision, the fat is redistributed or removed and the muscles are stretched. An incision below the inferior line is an alternative that allows the correction of the lower eyelid and the removal of skin excess. All of the incisions are very easily hidden under the folds and shapes of the area. The results will be shown gradually as the swelling and the hematomas wear off.

Are there other options?

The alternative options are those that use CO2 or Erbium laser to correct the flaccidity of the area, but in no way that will solve the build-up of fat tissue.

How is the recovery from the surgery?

Once the surgery is completed, the zone will be covered with an ointment or cold compresses. Initial healing will include some swelling, bruises or hematomas, irritation; you may feel your eyes are a bit dry and discomfort that can be treated with ophthalmic solutions and medication. Recovery of the incisions will take between 5 to 10 days; at that moment, some of the stitches will be removed if necessary. At that moment, you will be able to return to your job, as long as it doesn’t imply a physical effort. Healing will continue for several weeks and you will need to use solar protection and sunglasses.

What are the risks of the surgery?

The risks of this surgery are poor or anomalous healing, infections, temporary irregular vision and a difficulty to close your eyes. There’s always a risk when using anesthesia.

How long will the results last?

The final results will be seen some time after the surgery, generally 3 weeks afterwards. A year after the surgery the incision lines will be almost invisible.

In spite of the results, these will not be everlasting, and you will have to use solar protection and follow other instructions to extend them the most.

What do I need to get the surgery done?

After all the details have been confirmed with Dr. Robles, you will be given some documents related to the procedure. There, you will find the informed consent for the surgery, which is a written statement that you’ve been fully informed of the surgery you are about to be practiced, as well as the risks involved. You will also be given a sworn statement of your medical history. Both must be read and filled when they are given to you, however you’ll sign them the day of the surgery on Clínica Robles.

In order to assure your safety and to be certain that the surgery will go without any complications, Dr. Robles will perform some routine pre-surgical tests, including blood tests, ECG, surgical risk tests, and whenever necessary an ultrasound scan.

It is of the utmost importance that you have all of the medication and other elements that Dr. Robles had asked you in previous consults. A fast recovery will depend on that. Medication varies according to the type of treatment or your medical history. This is why that information must be the trustworthy.
