Otoplasty - Ears Surgery

Otoplasty - Ear Surgery

What is an otoplasty or ear surgery?

The otoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects the position of the ears when the significantly protrude on the sides of the head. When the ears are in this position, they may seem to be larger than they actually are. Macrotia (condition which causes the ears to be very large) may appear in one or both ears and also differ in its degree, which affects symmetry.

There are other types of malformations, that don’t necessarily affect hearing, which may be corrected through this surgery.

Am I a good candidate?

A good candidate will be a patient who has realistic goals for the surgery. It is very important that the patient is in good health, that is to say: the patient cannot have any condition that may compromise the healing process or risk his or her life. It is also advisable that the patient is non-smoker.

What does the surgery consist of?

Once the consults with Dr. Robles have been done, and the doctor has deemed the surgery necessary, the patient will be ready to go into the operating room. Once in there, Dr. Robles will mark the areas that will be treated and take pictures to be able to assess the results of the surgery.

When this is done, the doctor will locally anesthetize and sedate the patient to begin with the surgery.
The surgical procedure used to correct macrotia need techniques that recreate or increase the antihelical fold and reduce the midden cartilage when it is protruding.

Non-removable internal stitches will be used to create and secure the correct position of the new shape of the cartilage. External stitches will close the incisions to carry on with the surgery. The surgical techniques used will vary in each case, trying not to distort the adjacent structures.

This procedure will provide results which are immediately visible as soon as the bandages are removed. The new shape of your ears will allow the incision marks to be hidden by the natural folds of your ears.

Once the surgery is completed, the wounds will be cleaned and bandages will be put around the head to minimize the swelling and speed up the healing process. This will include bruises or hematomas in the area and a discomfort feeling, especially where the incisions where done. Even though these are normal signs, Dr. Robles will prescribe you medication to alleviate these ailments. Some facial movements will be restricted due to the stitches and normal discomfort caused by the surgery, but they will only be temporary.

Initial healing takes approximately 5 to 10 days, at that moment the stitches will be removed if necessary. After that, you will be able and encouraged to go back to work, as long as it doesn’t imply any vigorous efforts.

The healing process will continue for several weeks as the swelling disappears and the incision lines become finer. You must always bear in mind that you have to use sun block until the healing ends. If you follow all of the instructions provided by Dr. Robles and assist to all of the checkups you will recover quickly and the results will be optimal.

What are the risks of the surgery?

The risks associated to this surgery include infections, bleeding, hematomas, blood clots, irregular scarring and those related to using anesthesia.

What do I need to get the surgery done?

After all the details have been confirmed with Dr. Robles, you will be given some documents related to the procedure. There, you will find the informed consent for the surgery, which is a written statement that you’ve been fully informed of the surgery you are about to be practiced, as well as the risks involved. You will also be given a sworn statement of your medical history. Both must be read and filled when they are given to you, however you’ll sing them the day of the surgery on Clínica Robles.

In order to assure your safety and to be certain that the surgery will go without any complications, Dr. Robles will perform some routine pre-surgical tests, including blood tests, ECG, surgical risk tests, and whenever necessary an ultrasound scan.

It is of the utmost importance that you have all of the medication and other elements that Dr Robles had asked you in previous consults. A fast recovery will depend on that. Medication varies according to the type of treatment or your medical history. This is why that information must be the trustworthy.
